SPONSOR A RESIDENT AT THE CFS PRITHIPURA HOME
A staggering 20 percent of all children in Sri Lanka have some form of mental or physical disability. Despite disability being an ever-increasing problem in the country, it is often regarded as an unapproachable subject. The differently-abled are subject to myths and negative stereotyping that result in parents keeping their child hidden from the world without seeking the proper intervention. This results in the child retreating into themselves and becoming even more socially unskilled.
At the Ceylon Fellowship of Service Prithipura Home, we strive to provide love and support in a home environment for differently abled men, women and children.
The Home, which was started in 1962 by a Buddhist monk Bhikku Sumana and a Christian priest Father Brian de Kretser, is run by volunteers and a paid workforce, including a matron, her assistants and an administrative staff who look after the residents, many of whom have been abandoned by their families due to lack of economic and emotional resources.
Today there are 66 residents needing specialized care on a daily basis.
Our funds come from a small grant from the Department of Social Welfare and generous individual donors who have been very supportive over the years. However, every year it is becoming more and more difficult to meet the expenses for running the home; food, clothing, medicine, therapy, vehicle, premises and 22 staff.
Our accounts are independently audited annually and an annual report is presented by the President at the AGM.
We have calculated the cost of caring for a resident at Rs 18,000 per month, which includes food, clothes, medical check ups, medicine, carers, teacher’s salary and office staff. We are looking for individual sponsors who can contribute monthly to meet the needs of a resident. Sponsors should be able to commit for a minimum of one year. Once a resident is sponsored, we will share information with the sponsor every six months.
Some of the residents at the Home
-
Buddhika came to the Home in 2018. He is 14 years old. Found abandoned in a paddy field in Moneragala, Buddhika was found by the police and sent to the Home by the Department of Social Welfare. Severely malnourished, he was given a special diet and sent to the Ragama Rehabilitation Centre for treatment. Today he is vastly improved, in a special wheelchair, able to play with a ball and eat solid food.
-
Rajendran is 38 years old and has been at the Home for 29 years. He was sent to the Home because his parents were unable to care for him. Rajendran was sent to the Ragama Rehabilitation Centre for treatment and has a special wheel chair with a neck support. Rajendran’s sister visits him from time to time; he is always smiling and loves to chat.
-
Gayan Bandara was just seven years old when his mother brought him to Prithipura. He was obese and had behavioural issues. After coming to the Home, Gayan was taken to hospital for treatment to overcome his health and mental difficulties. Today Gayan is settled and able to live communally with other residents. His bad behavioural issues are much improved and he regularly attends the medical clinic at the National Hospital.
-
Fifteen-year-old Danuja Kavinda was sent to the Home by the courts in 2014. He was suffering from leukaemia and was unable to walk due to the malformation of his feet. His condition improved after regular visits to the Maharagama Cancer hospital. Since his recovery, the Ragama Rehabilitation Centre worked on his legs and after surgery he walks using a walker and shoes specially made for him. He has been accepted into a regular government school where he has bonded well with his fellow students.
